The groundbreaking hit ABC dramedy “Ugly Betty” is a must-watch for me every week. Here are three reasons why I tune in every Thursday night:

1. SHE’S UGLY. That’s right, folks. She’s a homely, chubby, nerdy girl who has no fashion sense. And she stays that way. In most post-modern fairy tales, we see the magical transformation of the ugly girl into the fashion plate 15 minutes before credits roll.

Don’t get me wrong, I love “fixer-upper” shows as much as the next girl, but if the movie or TV show went on another 10 minutes after the transformation, we would no longer relate to our endearing underdog. But in Ugly Betty, our heroine does not change into a cover model, the world around her changes. And why wouldn’t they? She’s awesome! Which brings me to #2…

2. SHE’S CONFIDENT. Despite her many imperfections, this girl has enough confidence and self-awareness to bottle and sell it, and I would gladly pay $59.95 – at least – to get a bit of it. Again, her confidence does not magically arrive along with an eyebrow wax and some high heel shoes. In fact, when she does get a makeover from her tacky sister, she loses some of that shine and swagger. Okay. She never swaggers. Betty’s clumsy. But.....
