Weekend Getaway in Bayfield, Wisconsin
When you fantasize about the perfect weekend getaway, Bayfield, Wisconsin is the town of your dreams. You just don’t know it yet. Gracing Lake Superior’s south shore at the top point of Wisconsin, Bayfield has the feeling of a seaport village on the East coast.
This quaint little town boasts a picturesque marina, Victorian B&Bs, and the catch of the day on every menu.
Have your pick of several lodging options for your stay, including condos with fantastic lake views, historic vacation rental homes, and hotels with the standard amenities. But you want the fantasy, and that can only mean one thing - the Old Rittenhouse Inn. Situated on a hill overlooking the town, the Rittenhouse is a majestic Victorian mansion with the unique status of being the first bed and breakfast inn in Wisconsin.
Rated one of the B&Bs in the nation, Rittenhouse features spacious rooms with Jacuzzi tubs, fireplaces, elegant décor and furnishings, and spectacular views of Lake Superior. Family owned and operated, Rittenhouse is famous for their food. The multi-course candlelit dinner is sure to inspire romance, and breakfast will keep you satisfied through lunch.
But don’t let a filling breakfast stop you from having lunch at Maggie’s. It’s hard to miss the pink building on Manypenny Avenue decorated with numerous pink flamingos, and there’s actually more of the pink whimsy inside. Get to Maggie’s early or late to beat the rush, and order the polenta fries and whitefish livers. Behind the light-hearted décor is one of the best menus in town, and the pies are homemade every day.
After lunch, stroll down Manypenny to Stone’s Throw, a gallery featuring beautiful pottery, stained glass, bird feeders created by local artisans. Stop in next door to What Goes ‘Round bookstore to pet the house cat and get lost in a hard-to-find book. Next, walk up Second Street to Rittenhouse Avenue and check out Joanne’s, where you can find blown glass birds and other treasures from Scandinavia.
Bayfield is home to many artists and you can discover them all at several galleries featuring landscape watercolors, hand-blown glass, woodcarving and jewelry. With three candy and fudge shops and two ice cream parlors, Bayfield will also satisfy your sweet tooth fantasy. Bayfield also offers a host of outdoor activities, including kayaking sea caves, canoe trips around the lake’s perimeter and a cruise around the nearby Apostle Islands.
If you want to get up close and personal with one of the islands, take the 20-minute ferry ride to Madeline Island, the only inhabited island in the chain. Take your car or park it at the ferry dock and “walk across.” The ferry takes you right to the heart of the town of La Pointe where pretty much everything is in walking distance.
If you only have a few hours, head straight for Tom’s Burned Down Café for a beer and some local color. Just steps off the ferry dock, visit the Madeline Island Heritage Center for an in-depth look at the island’s history and traditions. If you have more time, rent mopeds at Motion-to-Go and take a quick trip out to Big Bay State Park for wooded trails and gorgeous views. The ferry runs every half hour during peak season......
