Night Photography Beginner Advice

Taking photos at night requires skill and patience. Many novice photographers chuck away their cameras the moment the sun sinks behind the horizon simply because they have grown frustrated with failing to capture their desired night images.

While natural light is an important component of photographic composition, it’s not impossible to take stunning photos at night, when little natural light is available.

The Golden Hour

If a photographer wants to capture the mood of a night shot whilst still utilizing natural light, they need to take advantage of the “Golden Hour” of photography: dusk. Late dusk gives a photograph the illusion of nighttime, while natural light is still available to paint the subsequent photograph with rich, golden hues and alluring shadows, without sacrificing finer details of the image that would otherwise go un-captured during a night shoot because of extreme contrast.

Capturing the Perfect Night Shot

Capturing a perfect night shot usually requires a manual camera with a large selection of shutter speeds. Most new cameras offer photographers a wide range of speeds from sub-1, which is a perfect speed for night shots, to 30 seconds. When dealing with an older camera (the ones with a fixed 1 second shutter speed,) set the camera to “B” or “T” (Bulb or Timed settings).
