Amores Perros
|
Summary:
Lessons in Latin lovin´, commitment-phobia and fickle desire from the canine world. |
Details or Sample:
Attraction is a high octane thrill that should be indulged only when strapped securely in an ejector chair - catapulting to safety when facing catastrophe
The cardinal list of romantic ¨bad ideas¨ comprises desires from which there is no escape: for your best friend / your best friend´s girlfriend / your girlfriend´s best friend / your attractive new colleague / the house-mate you connect so well with. Love without a bolt hole is (to quote a friend) ¨like being locked in a room with your own personal Kryptonite.¨
For these reasons, I would normally be alarmed to pass the first night with my new flatmate Xela cuddling on the couch. I would be even more concerned to note my affection for her grow to the point where I can happily overlook some of her less attractive habits - polluting the apartment air with pungent farts, occasionally vomiting on the floor and generally being needy and difficult when horny.
However, as Xela is a most beautiful pure-bred Rhodesian Ridgeback dog, I have found my affection for her to be an uncomplicated gift. The same serenity does not, however, attend any of the myriad street dogs currently patrolling outside our door - driven wild with the desire to possess Xela.
Guatemala, where I live is, like other Latin American countries, home to in-numerable street dogs. These animals are often sad-looking, owner-less itinerants, surviving on unwholesome and irregular scraps of food. Xela, on the other hand, is an excellently cared for exemplar of a tall, beautiful and regal breed. Strutting her stuff in knowing superiority whenever she walks the streets of our home in Antigua, she is the local supermodel.
Xela normally conducts herself with something of a supercilious, even bullying, attitude to the local canine population. However, right now she is in heat and as each copulation-free day passes, Xela is getting increasingly desperate. That Xela, now a helpless slave to her hormones has become practically indiscriminate in her assessment of potential sexual partners is a cruel tease to her army of rough and tumble suitors.
