Memorial Spaceflights: A Cosmic Alternative to a High-Priced Funeral

Summary:
Aly Adair has published similar content on the Internet. Most people have never heard of Memorial Spaceflights let alone thought about launching their loved one´s cremains into space. You might think this fairly bizarre idea for the disposition of a loved one is expensive. Actually, launching your loved one into space can cost less than a burial. I attended the memorial spaceflight launch of The Millennial Flight, carrying my friend John. The experience ranks among the top five coolest things I have ever seen.
Details or Sample:
Are you and your loved one stargazers, Moon lovers, planet watchers, and all things astronomy? Are you and your loved one the ultimate Star Trek, Star Wars, and Lost in Space fans? Do you or your loved one watch 2001: A Space Odyssey over and over again? Was The Jetsons your and your loved one’s favorite cartoon as children? Did you or your loved one catch every episode of My Favorite Martian on television? If so, you may want to consider a Memorial Spaceflight as an option to burial for your final disposition or the disposition of your loved one.

Memorial Spaceflights are offered by Celestis, a space flight company in Houston. A lipstick-size vial of your loved one’s cremains can be launched into space on the top of a rocket. The satellite carrying your loved one may orbit the earth every 75 minutes for about 100 years. Or, you can choose to launch your loved one into lunar orbit, deep space orbit, or have your loved one’s cremains returned to earth. You can choose which Memorial Spaceflight is the best location for you to attend the launch and memorial service. You can work directly with Celestis or Celestis can work with a funeral home to make all the arrangements for a Memorial Spaceflight.

The Legacy Flight that launched in April 2007 near Las Cruces New Mexico, carried actor James Doohan and astronaut L. Gordon Cooper. The cremains of James Doohan, who played Scotty on Star Trek, was accompanied by memorial messages left by fans prior to the launch. Doohan and Cooper will also be aboard The Explorers Flight, scheduled to launch in June 2008. Luna 02, which will orbit the Moon, is scheduled to launch in 2009. There are already participants ready to ride the Luna 02 mission.

I attended the 1999 launch of The Millennial Flight carrying my girlfriend’s husband, John Leasure, who died at age 49 from liver cancer on Christmas morning. The launch of the Atlas rocket was held at Vanderburgh Air Force Base in California. This experience was one of the top five coolest things I have ever seen. People gathered from all over the world to share in a two-day memorial service to honor their loved ones. We viewed video and written tributes of loved ones, told stories and showed favorite pictures of loved ones, and gathered at mealtime to share special moments about our loved ones’ passions for space and adventure.

We were also treated to a tour of Vanderburgh Air Force Base and actually got to touch the Atlas rocket where our loved ones’ cremains were placed and ready to launch. Timothy Leary’s girlfriend attended to comfort those who shared in her experience of launching her loved one into space. Timothy Leary was aboard The Founders Flight that launched in April 1997. Gene Roddenberry, the creator of Star Trek was also aboard The Founders Flight.

On December 20, 1999 at 11:00 p.m., The Millennial Flight carrying John and others launched from the shores of the Pacific Ocean. We sat speechless on a grassy hillside, listening to the broadcast of the launch by Mission Control, and gazed with deep emotion as the Atlas rocket bolted into space and shortly disappeared. Survivors of the deceased were wrapped in blankets, hugging each other, but amazingly the tears did not flow. The experience was rather a joyous one where people sat in awe of their loved ones participating in the biggest adventure of their spirit world. It was a proud moment with a surreal sense of knowing that your loved ones are just loving this!
