God's Spiritual Zero Points

Summary:
This brief devotional, written for an audience of ministry leaders, uses zero points (a marching band´s practice guides) to illustrate the necessity of practicing spiritual disciplines.
Details or Sample:
During practices, some marching bands use a tool called zero points to help band members find their places at each moment in the show. These cardboard octagons, about a foot in diameter, are placed every five yards along the yard lines. All those whose assigned spots fall along the yard lines know they are where they should be when their feet fell on the zero points. Others look (“guide”) to those on the zero points to find their own places.

The Lord provides spiritual zero points to help us get to the places we should be. The Bible (Psalm 119:105), prayer (Hebrews 4:16), the Holy Spirit (John 14:16-17), and wise counsel (Proverbs 11:14) are several of these markers. It is especially important for you as a ministry leader to use these tools to keep your own life in line because others are looking to you as a guide for their own lives. Just as one or two band members out of place can throw off the entire formation, one or two ministry leaders who are not exactly in line with God’s Word can lead an entire ministry astray.

When you are busy taking care of all the details of ministry, it is easy to put off spiritual disciplines for a day or two – after all, you might reason, you are quoting Scripture to others and praying with them. However, God may have something He wants to teach you today. Don’t neglect to take the time to listen. Jesus promises, “Remain in Me, and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in Me” (John 15:4, NIV).
