Cholesterol and Heart Disease: Prevention Begins at Home

Most of you know that having high blood cholesterol level can lead you to the development of unwanted heart disease. The American Heart Association reports that even a 1% decrease in blood cholesterol levels can reduce the risk of having a heart attack by 2%. The benefits of lowering blood cholesterol levels can be compounded, as lowering levels by 10% reduces the risk of heart attack by 20%. There are many changes you can make in order to reduce your cholesterol and your chances of having a potentially fatal heart attack.

The cholesterol in your body comes from two sources. The liver produces cholesterol and releases it into the bloodstream. Medications prescribed to lower blood cholesterol levels function by decreasing the amount of cholesterol the liver creates. Secondly, the other source of cholesterol in the body comes from the foods you eat. Foods that contain cholesterol are foods that come from animals such as dairy products, organ meats, and egg yolks. Vegetables do not contain cholesterol although vegetables can raise cholesterol levels if they contain saturated fats.

Palm and coconut oils, both derived from plant sources, contain an abundance of saturated fats and should be avoided in any cholesterol lowering plan. With almost double the saturated fat of butter, coconut oil is not healthy even though it is derived from a plant source.

Low density lipoproteins (LDL), or “bad cholesterol” is the cholesterol that you are trying to lower in blood stream in order to lower your risk of heart disease. LDL’s carry cholesterol to the blood vessels, causing plaque deposits. These deposits can coat and clog vessels which may eventually lead to total blockage of a blood vessel.
