Should You Discipline Your Sibling's Children

Summary:
Family members may give each other permission to discipline their children but in the long run it might not be a good idea. This article takes a look at the conflicts that can arise between siblings over child discipline.
Details or Sample:
Family members often take it upon themselves to discipline each other´s children but is it a good idea to do so? In this article we will examine why it may be best to avoid disciplining your sibling´s children even if they give you permission to do so.

One of the reasons why it may be best to avoid disciplining your sibling´s children is that conflicts can easily arise between you and your sibling. You´re probably quite aware that children will fight and make up more easily and much quicker than adults. This holds true for adult siblings as well. Children will bicker with each other whether it is over a toy or something else and cousins are no exception. But most parents don´t like someone else disciplining their child and that may include family members. Conflicts may arise between adult siblings when one disciplines the other´s child especially if the parent feels his/her child was treated unfairly or was not at fault.

It may also be wise to take into consideration how the spouse or partner of your sibling may feel about a family member disciplining his/her child. If you discipline your sibling´s child it may cause problems between your sibling and his/her spouse. While the spouse may not say anything to you or other family members your sibling may very well get an ear full later. Your sibling may say that his/her significant other doesn´t mind but you may find out later that he/she does indeed mind.

While disciplining each other´s children may work fine in some families it may not go over well in others. Even if your sibling gives permission to discipline his/her child it may be best to refrain from doing so.
