Keeping Hope Alive

I sit at the computer and stare out the window at the woods, at the winter dark skeletons of trees, barren and unadorned. It’s snowing lightly, the sky is gray, and I am weary of winter.

I remember how the woods will look when spring arrives: before the leaves appear, the acres of trees will take on the most tender green haze, so faint you’re not quite sure if you’re actually seeing it or if it’s merely wishful thinking.

When I force myself back to the present, I notice the snow decorating the tops of the dark limbs on the dormant trees. It is truly beautiful. The calendar tells me it’s February 25. The amazing green haze could appear soon and the spectacular beauty of spring will soon follow.

We are all aware, at some level, of the cycles of our own lives, the ups and downs, the good times and times of despair. Rejoice in the good times, and keep the bad times in perspective. Understand that we must work through them while keeping our eyes and thoughts on the positive things that await us.

I moved here when my life was at an unusually low point. It was at the beginning of winter, snow, gray skies, and cold weather. The miracle is that even in this season, there are occasional warm days. The sun shines and lifts spirits, and even the barren forest offers glimpses of stark beauty.

Spring will come soon and coincidentally, my life is improving with the weather. Good news arrives more often, as do sunshine and blue skies.
