A Lesson in Generosity (Best Offer)
|
Summary:
This brief, inspirational blog entry uses a parenting anecdote about a toddler´s act of kindness toward her brother to make some observations about generosity. |
Details or Sample:
“For the fifth time, no! You may not have your sister’s snack!” I told Jamie, my three-year-old son, who was hovering like a vulture over his eighteen-month-old sister’s bowl of dry, sugary cereal. Jamie had already wolfed down two bowls of the stuff while his sister, Anna, was savoring hers piece by piece.
I spent the next ten minutes or so trying to protect Anna and her cereal bowl from her brother’s greedy fingers. Finally, I banished him to the living room sofa for a time out. Anna continued to munch slowly. As she neared the end of her bowl, I watched, astonished, as she carried it to the living room, climbed up on the sofa, and sat down next to her brother, offering to share the remainder of her treat with him. She had not needed my protection after all. I had been worrying that she would eventually get so frustrated with her brother’s begging that she’d lash out at him in anger; instead, she reached out to him with a loving gesture.
Simple acts of generosity like Anna’s not only warm the heart but also build bonds between people. I had been so concerned about curbing Jamie’s greedy appetite and eagerness to take something that belonged to his sister that I missed the opportunity to encourage actions that would strengthen their sibling relationship. Yet, Anna somehow knew that sharing was the right and kind thing to do. Often, the most vulnerable members of society are the ones who show the most generosity. The rest of us would do well to watch and imitate.
