The Power of Music
Music can be found in every culture in the world, performing a critical role in tradition and everyday life, and it seems music has always been a part of the human experience as musical instruments have been discovered dating back to early man.
Music has a biological basis with the brain having functional organization for music. Even in the womb humans respond to music and show musical preferences. The rules for music are innate, as some scientist put it, “wired into the brain”. This could be due to the fact that studies of the brain show no one area of the brain lighting up in response to music, rather specific areas of the brain react to the different components of music such as pitch, rhythm and melody. Thus, the perception of music is a whole brain function requiring both halves of the brain to work in accord. In fact, music has been found to be beneficial in learning as playing an instrument or singing facilitates the two sides of the brain working together, thus increasing the brain’s ability to process information. Children who are study music or play a musical instrument tend to be higher achievers.
Music also stimulates the areas of the brain associated with memory, emotions and pleasure. We have all had the experience of hearing a tune running through our heads although no song is playing, or felt a chill run up our spine at a particularly eloquent piece of music. Consonant and dissonant chords are naturally identified by the brain with consonant chords firing the reward centers of the brain, the same areas stimulated by food, sex and drugs.
The effects of music on the body are powerful, can be negative or positive, occur instantly and have a lasting effect. Music has the ability to change mood and weaken or strengthen emotions, and while musical perception is an individual experience, it has been established that music creates a similar physical response in many people simultaneously. Music can has a positive effect on the human body by causing relaxation, decreased blood pressure, increased concentration, and by aiding in learning and retention. Music can also be used in a positive way if the goal is to invigorate, inspire or motivate by increasing blood pressure, breathing, heart rate, pupil dilation and exciting the reward centers of the brain.
