Manhattan Offers a Big Bite of the Big Apple

There’s no doubt that as a destination for business, culture and entertainment, the city of New York is hard to beat, and the pulsing heart at the core of the city is Manhattan.

Manhattan is an island borough of New York City, surrounded by the Hudson River to the west and the aptly named East River to the East. Although the island is less than 23 square miles in above water land mass, it is also the most densely populated region in the United States, with over 1.5 million busy New Yorkers calling the island home.

Manhattan has become the commercial, financial and cultural center of the United States. The city is always bustling, home to Broadway, the world headquarters of the U.N., and the New York Stock Exchange. Manhattan isn’t all politics and accountants in suits though. Manhattan offers an infinite number of sites sounds, entertainment, attractions and rich cultures.

Not only does Manhattan offer the world famous Central Park at its center, but also the Central Park Zoo.

Located at 5th Avenue and 64th Street in Central Park, the Zoo welcomes well over a million visitors per year, who come to see the wide assortment of wild and exotic animals. The Central Park zoo offers guests the chance to get up close and personal with animals in special climate controlled enclosures, from the Penguins in their frigid Antarctic habitat, to the Madagascar Tree Boa in their tropical enclosure, and everything in between. Although the modern zoo has only existed since 1988, the history of the live animal exhibits at the location stretches back as far as 1864, making it what natives call “America’s oldest new zoo”. The zoo is open to the public from 10am to 4:30 pm daily, and admission is extremely affordable, only $8.00 for adults, $3.00 for children, and seniors get in for half price.

Another must-see location to put on your list is the Empire State Building. Located at 350 5th Avenue, just under 1,454 feet tall, the Empire State Building juts into the air from the heart of New York, adding its own unique imprint to the city’s skyline. 1,050 feet up, on the 86th floor, is the Empire State Building’s famous observatory, one of New York City’s biggest tourist attractions. The observatory has been open to the public since 1931, and it welcomes over 3.5 million visitors per year. It has even been featured in films such as “Affair to Remember” starring Carry Grant, and “Sleepless in Seattle” starring Tom Hanks. The observatory doesn’t just look out with a spectacular view over the city, it also features fun and unique experiences for the whole family, such as simulated helicopter rides, even posters and memorabilia from the famous “King Kong” films, which also prominently feature the building. The observatory is open to the public from 8am to 2am daily, adult tickets are $17.61, Children can go up for $12.07.

If you’re going to visit Manhattan than of course you’re going to need a place to stay. The downtown core offers many affordable options for accommodations, while still being within walking distance of all the action and excitement of the city.
