What is an Abscessed Tooth?

Summary:
This article presents an overview of the condition known as an abscessed tooth, causes and treatment options.
Details or Sample:
An abscessed tooth can cause severe pain and sleepless nights. I´ve had abscessed teeth before and let me tell you that the throbbing pain can make your whole head and face ache to the point where it seems there is no relief in sight. So what exactly is an abscessed tooth?

An abscessed tooth is a painful infection usually caused by tooth decay although it can also be caused by trauma to a tooth or the face. Left untreated the infection may spread to the supporting bone.

What are the symptoms of an abscessed tooth?

It is important to realize that there may not always be symptoms present at least in the early stage of infection. Symptoms may appear as the infection progresses. Symptoms of an abscessed tooth may include the following.

Swelling
Throbbing pain
Sensitivity to hot or cold
Swollen glands

If you suspect you have an abscessed tooth you should see your dentist as soon as possible. Once your dentist has determined that you have an abscessed tooth he or she will proceed with the best possible course of treatment. The usual course of action is to prescribe an antibiotic to fight the infection. Your dentist may also prescribe a pain medication. Further treatment depends upon several factors including the severity of the infection, the condition of the tooth and surrounding tissue.
