Home Remedies for Teething Pain

It seems like yesterday that you brought your newborn baby home from the hospital, and already the teething fairy is making her appearance. A baby´s first tooth does not usually break through until the sixth month, but the pain and symptoms of teething often begin as early as the third month. To ease your baby´s discomfort, and help you get a better night of sleep, try some of the home remedies for teething listed below.

Gum Massage:

The counter-pressure of a massage on your baby´s gums will relieve some of her discomfort and help the tooth break through the gum more quickly. You can purchase soft plastic covers for your fingers, or you can just use your bare hands. Make certain your hands are clean and your nails are clipped, and then massage the gums by gently rubbing them or letting your baby chew on your fingers.

Frozen Toys or Washcloths:

For many babies, a frozen teething toy or washcloth can bring huge relief to sore gums. Store teething toys in the freezer and let your baby chew away her teething pain. Some babies are better able to hold on to and manipulate frozen washcloths, so keep a supply of clean, frozen washcloths in the freezer as well.

Cold Drinks or Snacks:

Offer your baby a cold snack such as chilled applesauce, or a drink of juice or water to help ease her teething pain. The extra fluid intake from water or juice will also help replenish some of the fluids lost through drooling or loose stools.

Teething Tablets:

Hyland´s Homeopathic Teething Tablets are homeopathic tablets that many parents swear by. Before you give your baby any medication, whether homeopathic or not, consult your pediatrician.

Numbing Gels:

Benzocaine teething gels work by numbing your baby´s gums. Unfortunately, they will also numb your baby´s tongue and possibly even her throat. Some babies do not like the sensation of numbing gels, but others find the numbing effect a huge improvement over the pain caused by teething. Use these gels sparingly and with caution. Rarely, babies have been known to choke while using benzocaine gels due to a loss of gag reflex caused by a numb throat.

OTC Pain Relief:

Infant Tylenol should be used only a last resort, but is sometimes the only way to help reduce the pain long enough for a teething baby to get some sleep. Please call your pediatrician before giving your baby any over-the-counter pain medication.

Petroleum Jelly:

To prevent teething rashes from drool or loose stools, rub some petroleum jelly on your baby´s chin and bottom. Also, change clothes and bibs frequently to prevent irritation and keep your baby more comfortable.
