Growing Heirlooms: Moon & Stars Watermelon

Summary:
A 493-word article describing history, planting, growth habits, and a recipe using the heirloom Moon & Stars Watermelon.
Details or Sample:
Growing watermelons is amazingly fun and satisfying and easy enough for the novice gardener. The watermelon variety “Moon & Stars” is a variety that was originally introduced commercially in 1920 as “Sun, Moon, and Stars” but was growing in American family gardens for decades before that. In the 1970s, Kent Whealy of the Seed Savers Exchange began a long search for this reputedly delicious and easy to grow melon. For several years, his search was futile and he concluded that this heritage watermelon was lost forever. In 1980, he mentioned Moon & Stars in a television interview in Missouri. A farmer in Missouri was watching and contacted Whealy to let him know that Moon & Stars watermelon was indeed not extinct and that he was growing it in his garden. He saved Whealy some seed. Whealy picked up the seed and brought along a Mother Earth News photographer to document the event. The seed spread through the heritage seed community and became one of the most in-demand heirloom seed and it has been picked up by several other heirloom seed companies, making it available to home gardeners everywhere.
