Cape Town is a city rich with a cosmopolitan mix. More European than African in style people often joke that the Mother City - a term adopted in the 1930s - is not part of the African continent. French-type cafés and Belgian confectioners commingle with speciality shops whose glittering windows are reminiscent of the high streets of London or New York, not an African city. Turn a corner however, and you’re suddenly in Greenmarket Square. At the core of the city, Greenmarket Square with its cobbled floors and shady trees is a tumult of informal traders, curio vendors and a myriad of street entertainers. A bustle of people and the air redolent with the perfume of flowers and the smell of freshly brewed coffee - all perfectly encapsulated in warm sunny days that is Cape Town in the Summer.

Cape Town has some of the finest examples of Victorian and Dutch architecture on the continent. Mosques, cathedrals and shrines reflect Cape Town’s culturally history.

Settled since the mid-1600s, when Dutch colonists established victualling depots, Cape Town saw an influx of Malaysian and Indonesian slaves. One of the city’s founding fathers, Jan Van Riebeeck planted fresh produce gardens, known as the Company’s Gardens, to supply the Dutch fleet, which rounded the Cape Horn on its trips to the east.

Today the biggest attraction in Cape Town is the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront. Visitors from across the globe are drawn to its chic cafés and polished restaurants. Cape Town’s night life is concentrated on the piers and jetties of the Waterfront and during warm summer evenings, patrons enjoy the treats that this area has to offer. Trips to Robben Island via ferry embark from the V & A Waterfront. Robben Island, besides being a cultural attraction, with Nelson Mandela’s Cell 5 in B-section of the prison, also affords the visitor a magnificent view of Table Mountain....
