Steroids In Baseball? Thank You, Captain Obvious

Summary:
This entry looks at the Mitchell Report on steroids and baseball and finds, some of it is "old news."
Details or Sample:
The big report on steroids in baseball has been headline news across the country. But, much of it isn’t exactly new. Especially, when it comes to naming players.

The one almost-surprise for many is that pitcher Roger Clemens is on the list. It’s “almost” a surprise because many say they’ve been wondering how he’s been able to be so good for so long.

It’s not all 20-20 hindsight, either. A quick search online found a couple of articles that speculated that Clemens was using steroids, well before the Mitchell Report came out. His lawyer has issued a statement, denying steroid use.

Other than Clemens, many of the names in the Mitchell Report are even smaller blips of shock on the Richter scale.

For example: Barry Bonds. Is anyone out there, who’s even slightly familiar with baseball, who was not suspicious of the former San Francisco Giants player before he was named in the Mitchell Report? When Bonds broke the home-run record, there were debates on whether there should be an asterisk next to his name because of the steroid issue.

The Mitchell Report notes that Bonds has never tested positive. But, he “was indicted for perjury and obstruction of justice based on his grand jury testimony” into the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative (BALCO) investigation, which has been in the news. Former Senator George Mitchell writes, he didn’t get much cooperation from people involved in the BALCO case. Instead, he says he used information that was in the public record, tying players to steroids.

Speaking of public record, here’s a good one -- Juiced. It’s a book by Jose Canseco, who’s also in the steroid report. The Mitchell Report hardly breaks new ground, when you can read all about steroids in Juiced.
