The deadliest threat to one’s writing career is often not the pile of rejection letters. The real enemy is the mound of personal rejection accumulated in your self-concept.

Your inner critic will attack you, block you, and attempt to sabotage your career from the inside. Pull it out of the hiding place inside you and give it form. The key is to give it a physical form that can be destroyed.

One fun way to do this is to cut parts of different faces that you think represent the moods or words of your inner critic, and compose a face on a cork board out of them. It’s perfect for a dart-throwing target when you hear your inner critic getting snarky.

Another idea is to mold your vision of your “inner critic” out of modeling clay, then smash it. You don’t want to get dough in your new ergonomic keyboard, though, so be careful!

Using hot glue, twigs, and a few small rocks or wooden beads, create a “critic.” Stand him up or have him sit near your workspace to remind you that sticks and stones may break your bones, but his words can not pierce the impenetrable force that is your creative soul. Rather than destroying this one, you render your inner critic powerless to thwart your resolve.
