Male Menopause is Not Santa Claus

Summary:
Details some of the symptoms surrounding the onset of andropause, or male menopause, and potential ways to alleviate the symptoms and cope with the physiological and psychological changes that occur during this stage of adulthood. Points out that a man´s mid-life crisis is less humorous from the inside, as the physical and hormonal changes are no myth.
Details or Sample:
Male menopause? Are you joking? Does that even exist?

Although many people joke about the stereotypes of men in mid-life crises, little attention is paid to the hormonal changes men experience during this time.

Male menopause most definitely does exist, and is known as andropause. This is quite similar to the women’s menopause, though the concept is not as widely understood as that of women’s. Lack of knowledge and recognition of this life phase could be one reason why middle age seems quite complicated for men, and why they may make some destructive choices in their lives during the “mid-life crisis.”

What Happens When Andropause Sets In?

There are many signals that announce the setting in of andropause, just as perimenopause announces the approach of “the change” in women’s bodies. Some of the most common symptoms are discussed briefly below:

Decrease in sex needs

It is universally accepted that with age, men may experience a marked decrease in their sex requirement, as well as in their ability to have sexual intercourse. The penis needs more direct stimulation and the erections are not as pronounced as they are when men are in their twenties and thirties. This is because of the marked decrease in testosterone that happens during this period.

With the perception of decreasing sexual prowess comes a feeling of inferiority, which is often based on the fact that sex and being masculine are often associated in virtually all societies. While a woman experiences long PMS and bouts of depression in the pre-menopause period, a man may also experience depression, which has a direct affect on the libido and the ability to become aroused.

As with women, these symptoms may be alleviated by HRT, or hormone replacement therapy, with excellent results.
