Do’s and Don’t’s of Effective Punishments

Most parents struggle with punishing their children. We don’t want to, but we know we have to. Then when we do, we don’t want to seem like a witch, so we make the punishments a breeze! And sometimes we simply get so fed up with the whole process we give up and the children get away with everything. Use the following tips to make punishments work for you:

Do: Make the rules clear
In order for kids to obey the rules they need to know the rules. And in order for your kids to know the rules, you need to be clear-cut about the rules. Decide together as parents what the rules of your home are and write them out. You can give each child a list of the rules and/or use a poster board to keep them in plain view of everyone 24/7. As your kids grow older new things will pop up that will likely need to be added to the list.

Do: Make the consequences clear
If children know exactly what will happen if they break rules, they will be less likely to break them. Consequences don’t have to be a surprise. Children should know what they are in for if they break rules, then they can’t come back and say they didn’t know or are surprised when they lose out on something.

Don’t: Give in to pressure or emotions
Your children are not going to be happy when they are punished. They aren’t supposed to be. They are suppose to suffer and feel the consequences of their actions. If they are upset, disappointed and say they hate you, you’re doing your job. They can cry, they can say you’re being unfair, but the last thing you should do is give in or reduce a punishment.
