Details or Sample:
Surya Namaskar means Salutations to the Sun and the practice perhaps had its origins in the ancient Hindu practice of sun worship. Even in modern times no one will deny the vital role of the sun on our lives, and we can regard the practice of Surya Namaskar as our way of acknowledging and appreciating this. The sun is the greatest source of natural energy without which plants or any other life form cannot exist on earth. Just as the use of solar energy has increasing importance in our daily life, we can look upon this set of yogic postures as a way to recharge our vital batteries and instill new vigor in our lives.
Surya Namaskar combines Asanas or postures with Pranayama or proper breathing techniques. Practiced in the highest form Surya Namaskar, also incorporates meditation on the Chakras or energy centers of the body as well as chanting of specific Mantras while performing particular Asanas. Thus, it is a complete exercise in Yoga which can benefit the body, mind and spirit. However, one needs to learn the higher techniques from a trained master with a spiritual bent of mind. Only then will a person be able to incorporate all the essences of this intricate practice correctly, and thus benefit fully from it. The physical benefits can be achieved by a solitary practitioner, who can look forward over time, to a body of which even a professional sports person would be proud.
Surya Namaskar, as mentioned earlier is actually a set of yogic postures that flow from one to the next. They can be broken up into two half sets each comprising of twelve Asanas. While each Asana is complete in itself and has its own benefits, it is the sequence of forward and backward bending exercises, accompanied by alternate exhaling and inhaling carried out simultaneously, that give the complete and correctly performed Surya Namaskar its unique advantages. It may seem complicated at first but with regular practice not only will the movements become smoother but also more enjoyable and energizing.
Surya Namaskar is best performed at sunrise, facing the east. This may not always be practical – in fact how many of us even manage to see the sun rise at all? While it can be performed at any time of the day do try and face the sun while doing so. It will be wonderful if it can be done outdoors, in the open. As with all other exercises of yoga, Surya Namaskar should be done on an empty stomach - that means at least four hours after a meal. Loose fitting, comfortable clothes are best and use a small mat or rug on the floor. It is essential that your mind is at rest and your entire awareness is focused on what you are doing.
The best way to begin the practice of Surya Namaskar is to learn the individual Asanas. The body has to be fairly supple and capable of bending forward and backwards with ease. Most teachers of Yoga insist that everyone benefits from it and can practice Surya Namaskar their own pace. However it is best to consult your doctor if you suffer from any medical condition. Persons suffering from high blood pressure, stroke, coronary artery disease, hernia or intestinal tuberculosis, or those who are physically very weak should refrain from this practice. Expectant and nursing mothers should also seek medical advice before starting. Further it is best learnt from an expert teacher of Yoga.
