The origin word pewter is not known for sure but it is believed that the word may have came from the English word, spelter. The word was known as peauter, in Dutch, peitre, peautre, or piautre, in France, peltre, in Spain, and peltro, in Italy. The earliest pewter known is the Roman pewter and it has been found in England and other places. The pewter was made of lead and tin only at that time. There was some traces of iron found in it occasionally but it is believed that it was an accident that it was in the items.

Pewter was used, in earlier days, for practical uses such as plates, mugs, and utensils. In the mid 1700 it was discovered that there were health hazards and tarnishing problems with the pewter which contained lead so they began making pewter without the lead. The new form of pewter was called Britannia metal. The new form of pewter was made up of tin, antimony, and copper. Pewter is a general name for a number of alloys of various metals used in different amounts. Tin is always the main ingredient in the pewter. The pewter was made from one of two methods. It was either hammered or it was cast. Later there was another method of producing the pewter called spinning. This is the art of shaping the vessel in a mold on a wheel by putting pressure of a blunt tool to the pewter and the softness of the pewter allows it to be shaped the way they want it by applying pressure where needed. This method is still used by many major manufacturers and skilled craftsmen today.
