Peanut Butter and Your Pets: How Much is Too Much?

In the past few years, peanut butter has become an increasingly popular treat for pets. With very little effort, one can find all sorts of snacks that cater to the peanut butter palate; there are peanut butter flavored biscuits, specially-made peanut butter cookies for pets, and even toys that are designed with the peanut butter connoisseur in mind. But are peanut butter treats really a wise pick for our pets? Are there risks involved, when it comes to giving peanut butter and, if not, how do you know how much is a “safe amount?” While we like to give our pets treats, we want to ensure they stay healthy, rather than becoming portly porkers.

Before you go to give your pet that lovin’ spoonful, first take a gander at the ingredients of that peanut butter that you plan to use. While we might be lured in by promotional adds that tell us what picky parents choose, or which brand tastes the most like real peanuts, a large variety of peanut butters are actually very unhealthy. Loaded with sodium (salt), sugars, oils and preservatives, some even have dyes and artificial flavoring added to them, all of which are very unhealthy for your pet and can lead to obesity and many other conditions. If you’re going to feed your dog a little peanut butter treat, do him a favor and make sure that it’s a natural peanut butter, free from artificial flavors and preservatives, as well as being low in sodium and sugar. He’ll love it just as much as the other brands, and you won’t have a little piglet for a pooch!
