Creative, Long Lasting Gifts for Real Estate Clients

by Lynne D. McCloskey
Approx. 925 words, Word doc

If you are a real estate agent who lives in a large metropolitan area, gifts for your buyers at close of escrow are easy enough to find, such as floral arrangements, gift baskets, fruit bowls, theater tickets, etc. However, if you work in a small community, rural area, or retirement village, you may need to be a little more creative. Stay alert when showing homes to prospective buyers. Ask questions, but not just about real estate needs. And then listen! Try to keep your mind from focusing only on a sale. Get some insight into the buyers’ business, family, hobbies, sports, and favorite pastimes.

As soon as you have time, write a few notes in the clients’ file so you will remember their interests. Are they retiring and want to do more crafts, take up fishing, or lie on the beach and read magazines all day? Are they buying a weekend place so they can kayak in the river or ride quads in the mountains? Are they parents who want to give their children a healthier lifestyle or teach them respect for nature? Listen!

When your clients close escrow, check their file to determine an appropriate gift. Give something meaningful, long lasting, and that will remind them of you. They may have family and friends who will visit and decide to move to the area, too. When they inquire about real estate agents, you do want your clients to remember your name, don’t you? Here are some gift ideas to get you started.

If they are purchasing a fixer upper, they could probably use a gift certificate to a hardware store. Or maybe a highly reflective address sign to be seen by emergency personnel would be appropriate. And if the outside is bare, a fast-growing tree or shrubs could get them started on landscaping. Yard art made by local craftsmen might also be welcome, or a yard or patio swing.

When children are involved in the move, use your computer to create a popular board game. The essentials are sold at hobby stores or online. You receive software, a game board, tokens to move around the board, plus labels for the cards. Use your computer to name the streets and railroads after local streets and avenues or for the family’s names, i.e., (last name) Avenue, (first name) Place, (pet’s name) Railroad, etc. If the local schools have a pride day where the children wear special t-shirts, sweatshirts, jackets, or hats, purchase some for the clients’ children to help them fit in.
