Embracing Yoga for Beginners
You don´t need a personal trainer to achieve physical fitness. Better yet, you don´t need any special equipment. You don´t need a lot of money or access to a well-stocked gym. All you need is comfortable clothing, a space of your own, and the will to succeed. Whether you join a local class or borrow a video from the library, yoga is a gentle, enjoyable way to bring fitness to your life. Best of all, yoga has many incidental benefits. You won´t just get fit; your entire well-being will improve.
Yoga has become very popular in recent years, but some people still feel uncomfortable when they think of trying it out themselves. There are a number of reasons for this. First of all, yoga can appear intimidating to a novice. But while it´s true that advanced yoga postures take years to master, no beginner is expected to stand on her head or balance on one hand. There are a variety of yoga styles and postures, and a competent instructor will help you develop a routine to suit your needs. If you can´t afford a class (or don´t want to take one), there are literally thousands of yoga videos, books, DVDs, and audio recordings available. Many of these target beginners, and they provide an easy introduction to yoga.
If you do decide to take a class, make sure you´re comfortable with the instructor and the other students. Most instructors will let you come to a trial class for free. This gives you an opportunity to scope your surroundings. If you walk into a room of twenty-somethings in leotards bouncing on their toes, you might decide this isn´t the place for you -- or it might be exactly what you wanted. The wonderful thing about yoga is that it´s open to such a wide variety of people. Men, women, and children of all ages, abilities, and ethnicities practice yoga with great success. With patience and determination, you´re bound to find a place you fit in.
The typical yoga routine begins with a sun salutation, a series of movements designed to relax your body and get your muscles ready to move. Once you are loose and limber, a yoga routine can take anywhere from twenty minutes to over an hour to complete, and may include a wide variety of postures. A yoga posture is generally held for four to five breaths, long enough to allow you to obtain the full benefits of the pose. Postures include such activities as lunging, balancing, and stretching. They increase strength, stamina, and flexibility. This routine is followed by stretching and a reflective period. Depending on the class and instructor, the meditation may take only a few minutes, or it may compose the vast majority of the class.
Some people are reluctant to try yoga because they associate meditation with Hinduism. While it´s true that yoga originated in India, where its original practitioners would have surely associated meditative practices with religion, modern yoga rarely embraces any particular spiritual beliefs. The general principles of yoga do include a spiritual aspect, but they generally focus on calming the mind, relaxing the body, and opening the soul. People tend to associate meditation with Asian faiths, but the type of meditation practiced in yoga is compatible with Christianity, Islam, Judaism, and many other religions besides.
Once you overcome your initial trepidation and give yoga a try, you´re bound to notice an improvement in your general well-being. Your body will slowly grow stronger, more flexible, and more accustomed to your routine. If you stick with it, you´ll amaze yourself with what you accomplish. A short daily practice can improve your health, increase your fitness, calm your mind, and soothe your soul. So if you´ve ever shied away from yoga in the past, take a deep breath and give it a try! You just might find yourself wondering why you ever delayed. |
