Throughout the ages, dragons have figured prominently in the literature and culture of various peoples. They have played a major role in how writers and artists portray mankind"s performance in the never-ending battle between good and evil. Dragons are portrayed either as good beings, assisting men or women in a noble quest, or as frightening, fire-breathing creatures that do the bidding of some dark master...
Stories abound in which dragons heat up the plot. In Greek mythology, the dragon Ladon guarded the golden apples in the Hesperides gardens; it was defeated by Hercules in one of his quests. In Norse mythology, the character Svipdag was transformed into a sea dragon and it was his task to guard treasure. Similarly, another treasure-guarding dragon, in the classic Anglo-Saxon poem, "Beowulf," mortally wounds King Beowulf in battle. The dragon went into a fiery rampage after its treasure-trove was ransacked. And in the Bible, numerous references are made to the dragon...
With a few exceptions, dragons are generally shown in movies as beneficent creatures that use their power and magic to help men, women and children. In the sequel to Universal"s DragonHeart 2: A New Beginning, both the good and bad "guys" are dragons. In the Touchstone Pictures film Reign of Fire, dragons came to rule the earth after being awakened by a boy. The dragons in this film had a diet of ashes, so in order to survive, they had to burn everything in sight and eat the ashes. In the classic Walt Disney film Sleeping Beauty, the sorceress Maleficent turns into a gigantic dragon that breathes green fire to battle Prince Charming as he charges toward the enchanted castle to awaken his princess with a kiss...
