Details or Sample:
The Continental Navy was just beginning to form, five ships constituting the force protecting the young country"s shores. Jones served on both the Alfred and the Providence after receiving his commission as a Lieutenant in the American Navy.

His most famous vessel, however was a French merchantman ship he rebuilt and named for American statesman and inventor Benjamin Franklin, Bon Homme Richard ("Poor Richard," after the famous almanac). In late 1779, he led a small fleet on a cruise and encountered the British frigate Serapis, which he engaged in a three and a half hour battle by moonlight. When it seemed his ship had taken so much damage it could not possibly survive, the British captain asked Jones if he were ready to surrender. His response? "Sir, I have not yet begun to fight." He went on to force the surrender of the Serapis and transferred to her decks when the Bon Homme Richard eventually sank.
