Corner Gas: Little Service Station on the Prairie
By Alison Braidwood
The award-winning Canadian sitcom “Corner Gas” had its American debut on Superstation WGN on September 17, 2007. Now entering its fifth season in Canada, “Corner Gas” has been favorably compared to “Seinfeld”; another show where nothing much goes on. In this case the nothingness occurs in small town Saskatchewan and is laugh-out-loud funny.
Humor is a matter of taste, and if yours runs to dry one-liners, sarcastic banter, and the occasional bit of slapstick, then the antics of the inhabitants of Dog River, Saskatchewan will be right up your street.
Fans of “Corner Gas” are rabidly loyal, as proven by numerous debates on internet discussion forums. People tend to either love “Corner Gas”, or else they completely fail to see what the fuss is about. Those who do love it go to great lengths to see the show. A growing legion of American fans, deprived until now of a US network airing, watched “Corner Gas” online at CTV.ca or bought DVDs of the show to share with family and friends.
Now that “Corner Gas” has been unleashed on the American networks, the rest of the US can also get to know the motley crew of characters:
Brent Leroy – runs Corner Gas, the town service station. Sarcastic and laid-back, he’s the closest to “normal” of any of the characters. Which isn’t saying much.
Hank Yarbo – a baseball cap-wearing goof, Hank is Brent’s best friend. Basically unemployable, he’s an enthusiastic liability and the quintessential small town loser.
Lacey Burrows – the goody-two-shoes owner of the Ruby Café, has recently moved to Dog River from the big city. She tries too hard, has permanent foot-in-mouth disease, and is a bit of a fish out of water. Lacey constantly attempts to introduce newfangled modern notions (like Pilates and book groups) to Dog River, with little success.
Wanda Dollard – works in the gas station’s convenience store, is a self-declared genius, and has an endless supply of sarcastic put-downs.
Oscar Leroy – Brent’s Dad is a curmudgeon who says whatever the heck he wants, whenever the heck he wants. Oscar is supposedly retired from running the family gas station, but still likes to stick his oar in, and delights in causing as much trouble as humanly possible.
Emma Leroy – Brent’s longsuffering mother is smart, exasperated, and prone to muttering “Idiot,” whenever Oscar opens his mouth.
Sergeant Davis Quinton – the senior of the town’s two police officers, Davis has a child-like sensibility, reads “Cosmo” magazine, and is a sci-fi geek. He’s a sweetheart but a bit of a doofus.
Constable Karen Pelly – young, gung-ho, and keen, she’s the Abbot to Davis’s Costello. She’s also a bit of a doofus.
If you’ve ever lived in a town where the installation of an ATM machine or traffic light caused a sensation, you’ll love “Corner Gas”.
With no laugh track, dry humor, and well defined, oddball characters, “Corner Gas” should be one foreign import that American viewers adopt wholeheartedly. After all, the quirky foibles of small town life are instantly recognizable, whichever side of the border you hail from.
