Choosing a Progesterone Cream
|
Summary:
It is important to be selective with progesterone creams, since some contain non-active ingredients or mineral oil which can even block absorption. |
Details or Sample:
For many women facing menopause, a progesterone cream is the best way to help rid them of uncomfortable symptoms, such as hot flashes and night sweats. However, there are literally hundreds of progesterone creams on the market, so how do you choose one? What should you look for in a cream? This article will answer those questions and more.
First of all, you need to be aware that not all progesterone creams are alike. Some contain so little progesterone that you would get absolutely no benefits from using the recommended amount. Others contain very high levels and you need to carefully regulate your use of them to avoid unpleasant side effects. The daily recommended dose of progesterone is between 400-500 mg.
You should try to stick to USB progesterone, as well. This is progesterone that has the identical molecular makeup as the progesterone produced by your own body. There are many creams that use other forms of progesterone that are patented. Since you can’t patent something that occurs in nature, these are altered forms of progesterone that can cause nasty side effects.
Don’t buy a cream that says its active ingredient is wild yam extract. This extract contains no progesterone, just diosgenin, which is useless to our bodies. In a lab, however, this same chemical can be used as the basis of a process that creates bio-identical progesterone. Read the ingredients list carefully and you’ll see whether or not the cream contains wild yam or progesterone derived from wild yam.
You will also want to avoid progesterone creams that contain mineral oil. Mineral oil forms a barrier that actually prevents the progesterone from being absorbed by the skin. A natural oil such as soy or a vegetable oil will help, rather than hinder, the absorption of the progesterone. Check the label for other chemicals that you may not want to enter your body and bloodstreams, too.
Progesterone creams that come in tubs will rapidly lose their effectiveness, thanks to oxygen exposure, which leaches the progesterone from the cream. That’s why it’s best to buy creams that come in tubes, where the exposed surface is minimized.
Price is another consideration. A $10 jar of progesterone cream is probably not very high in the necessary hormone, but a $50 is probably fairly similar to a $30 one and might not be in your price range. Check the ingredients carefully and base your decision on that in combination with the price.
Choosing the right progesterone cream is important. Without real progesterone, the cream will not help your symptoms at all. If you end up with a cheap cream that has only wild yam extract and a mineral oil base, you’re basically wasting your time and money. So, read that ingredient list, refer to the points above and you should be fine.
