Lifestyles of the Motocross Rich & Famous

By Alison Braidwood

When movie stars reach the peak of fame they buy private jets, acquire plasticized trophy wives, and McMansions in Beverly Hills. When motocross stars hit the big time they build motocross tracks in their backyards and race their friends at weekends. Motocross is all about a down-to-earth enjoyment of life, thrills, spills, and speed.

James “Bubba” Stewart is the wunderkind of the motocross circuit. Still only 22, he’s been racing since he was a kid, but is now so successful that he’s acquired all the boy toys he could possible want. Which includes a motocross track in his backyard. He may hang out with Tom Cruise occasionally, but you know that his mind is on the track 24/7.

Tim “Red Dog” Ferry is to replace Stewart (who has dropped out due to injury) on the USA Team at the 2007 Motocross of Nations. He’s ten years older than Bubba and has suffered ups and downs in his career (being dropped by two sponsors after injuries). He’s had a phenomenally successful 2007 season, though, and has accumulated his own share of boys’ toys. Which includes both a motocross track and Supercross track in his backyard.

Ryan Villopoto is the third member of Team USA (along with Ferry and Ricky Carmichael) at the Motocross of Nations event. He’s still only 20, so is the baby of the team and, you guessed it, he’s got his own private motocross track.

Are you sensing a theme here?

Racers earn cash through endorsements, prize money, and contracts with bike manufacturers, and the best can earn millions of dollars a year. But the motocross lifestyle doesn’t allow much time for hanging out with movie stars (although it does allow some) – the sport demands peak physical condition, a winner’s mentality, a high pain threshold, and the need for extreme speed.

When it comes down to it having your own motocross track is the ultimate boy’s toy. But these boys have earned their toys, and more.
