Those who love fast bikes and fast action seem to be inexorably drawn to the exciting sport of motocross. Motocross, also known as MX or MotoX, continues to be one of the most popular pastimes for lovers of motorcycle racing, and the sport continues to gain new adherents with every passing year. The entry of all terrain vehicles, or ATVs, into the sport has made it even more exciting, although for many MX aficionados there is no substitute for the rough and tumble two wheel action.
Typically held on enclosed off-road racing circuits, motocross is a popular activity for spectators and participants alike. A typical weekend of motocross action might put you in contact with everyone from octogenarian grandparents to children barely out of diapers. The participants run the gamut in terms of age and experience as well, with many motocross clubs devoted to nourishing the interest of young bikers and helping them learn to race both quickly and safely.
While many other sports are called off when the weather turns nasty, the sport of motocross thrives in the rain and the mud. In fact some of the most memorable motocross races in history have been held on muddy tracks, and many participants in the sport love the challenge of racing over uneven and uncertain terrain.
The length of a motocross race can vary quite a bit, but the races are generally measured either by time elapsed plus one or two laps, or by a set number of laps. The top level races tend to be measured in time plus laps, i.e. 30 minutes and two laps, while many amateur meets can be as short as ten minutes in duration. In cases where the race is measured in time plus laps, the flagger will signal that the number of laps remaining, and the race will be determined by the checked flag.
One of the most loved features of motocross racing is the fact that the track is able to incorporate many natural features of the terrain, making for an interesting and varying race each time. In addition to the natural features the race track can be enhanced by a number of jumps and other manmade features. The hills and turns are a favorite with the crowds as well, and many top motocross races feature some truly death defying stunts in addition to the sheer speed of these great bikes.
