Summer is fast slipping away, and with it many of our chances for a last-minute summer vacation. But we can always dream of a vacation to a faraway, exotic land.

Kick back your recliner and imagine you have spent your day jetting to Los Angeles, where you hopped a flight to Kauai, Hawaii.

Tired but excited, you get off the plane and are greeted by towering pines, Royal Poincianas with deep red-orange blooms, hardy hibiscus bushes and sprawling bougainvilleas.

Hey, wait a minute, you think. This isn´t supposed to be Anna Maria Island in Florida. It´s supposed to be Hawaii, the land of the grass skirts, hula, and luau.

Where are the grass skirts?

You hop into your rental car and take a spin. Hey, there´s a trolley. You turn your head. Was that a Lihue shuttle or Manatee County´s Island Trolley?

Eventually the road comes to and end at Ke´e Beach, but instead of sugar white sand, the sand is brownish gold.

Ready for adventure you don hiking boots and make your way along the narrow trail through the cliffs. Straight down is the Pacific Ocean. You enjoy the gorgeous ocean views. You sleep under the stars.

After 11 miles of hiking, you´ve made it. You´ve done the Kalalau Trail. Now you long for a soft bed where you can rest. How could you have planned to leave, so soon?
