Genealogy Documentation

Summary:
Article broadly describing the importance of documentation and collecting additional data for genealogy research.
Details or Sample:
Researching your family tree can be an entertaining hobby, but many of us have hit the relentless “brick wall”. You’ve come to your 4th great-grandfather and simply cannot find any documented traces of him. It is a researcher’s nightmare. Collecting additional data and documentation is a definite must.

There are two types of family researchers, the ones who concentrate on just one line and those who collect everything they get their hands on. Neither type is wrong as long as they have a good system of documentation. When researching, you must take note of where you found the information and what that information was. Many times you will need this information again, either for additional information or proving your line.

I like to refer to the two types of researchers as “one-liners” or “packrats”. One-Liners usually document everything and have excellent sources. Their research can be almost flawless and can be very useful, that is if it also your family line. The packrats can have a tremendous amount of data, but many times they cannot tell you where they found the information. Documentation is extremely important.
