Caribbean Conversations
By Tammy Ruggles
From rappers to politicians to writers, people from all walks of life, historical and contemporary, have had something to say about the Caribbean. It’s been said in song, glorified in movies, and splashed across the pages of glossy travel magazines. And all is deserved. So let’s listen in on some of these voices, for in them you just may hear the Caribbean whispering to you…
I think humour can be very powerful. Humour breaks down boundaries, it topples our self-importance, it connects people, and because it engages and entertains, it ultimately enlightens--John Agard, Caribbean English poet.
I come from a place that likes grandeur; it likes large gestures; it is not inhibited by flourish; it is a rhetorical society; it is a society of physical performance; it is a society of style--Derek Walcott, Caribbean poet and Nobel-prize winner.
Though I don’t live in Haiti, I feel very connected to it. It’s as much a part of me as the United States, as much home for me–if in a more spiritual way--Edwidge Danticat, Haitian American writer.
I love the development of our music, that´s what I really dig about the whole thing. How we´ve tried to develop, y´know? It grows. That´s why every day people come forward with new songs. Music goes on forever--Bob Marley, Jamaican reggae singer and musician.
My work has been much more Caribbean and eclectic. I am interested in people, and where they come--Katherine Dunham, American dancer.
The countless number of influential figures in American history who are of Caribbean heritage indicates the need to set aside a designated time to celebrate their contribution to our country--Eliot Engel, American politician.
Visual surprise is natural in the Caribbean; it comes with the landscape, and faced with its beauty, the sigh of History dissolves.--Derek Walcott, Trinidadian playwright.
When you´re in the Caribbean, you´re having the best time, you´re hearing a lot of beats and rhythms that you don´t hear in New York sometimes, ´cause then you come back and it´s snowing--Wyclef Jean, American rapper.
Other Caribbean cultural expressions, like food, dance and art, are becoming established in mainstream America--Charles Rangel, American politician.
I pray that our deliberations will redound to the benefit of those we serve, the people of our beloved Caribbean--Baldwin Spencer, Antiguan statesman.
