Battling constipation? Your nearest grocery store, pharmacy and health food store are your allies. Stock your arsenal with weapons to defeat constipation, maintain regularity, and maximize your health.
The most effective home remedy depends on the cause, severity of your constipation, your body, and other factors. So you will want to explore different solutions and gauge results.
Then you can establish a regimen, which very likely will rely on a variety of techniques.
Be sure to avoid dehydration by drinking plenty of water. Avoid the excessive consumption of diuretics, like tea. Incorporate regular exercise into your routine.
Here are some more tips:
* Stock up on fruit -- fresh, frozen, canned, dried, or juiced. Prunes are popular, but lots of others including blackberries, cherries, plums, oranges and raisins, encourage bowel movements. Donīt underestimate the power of fruit. A large bowl of fruit for breakfast or lunch may do the trick.
* Boost your fiber intake by replacing white-flour products with whole grains where-ever possible. For example, instead of white bread choose multi-grain or whole wheat. Choose brown rice instead of white. Consider adding bran or boosting the amount of bran in your diet. Muffins and cereal are good sources. Or add bran to your own home-made breads or meat loaf.
* Consider boosting your intake of vegetables and other high-fiber foods like split peas, lentils, beans, coconut, broccoli and dates. Proceed with caution; remember beans are notorious for gas!
* Consider psyllium powder or capsules from your grocery or health food store. These provide extra fiber to speed elimination naturally and should be taken with water. Too much can give you gas or bloating, however. To make the powder more enjoyable to drink, turn it into a smoothie by adding fruit and nuts.
* Castor oil is a time-proven home remedy and flavored oil now is available. Another option is mineral oil.
