The Basics of Poker
The game of Poker can be played with any standard deck of 52 cards, though some versions of the game involve multiple decks and/or are played with the jokers included. From low to high, the cards are ranked as: Ace, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, Jack, Queen, King, and Ace. In Poker, the Ace can function as a high, or low, card. In a standard deck of cards, there are four suits: clubs, hearts, diamonds, and spades. All the suits are the same value, and no suit trumps another.
A basic Poker game involves a participant being dealt five cards, and whoever gets the highest hand wins. In some versions of Poker, there are Wild Cards. Wild Cards are cards that can count as any rank or suit. Oftentimes, this is what the jokers of the deck are used for, but sometimes another card is stipulated as wild before the game begins. For example, a dealer may say: deuces wild. This means the 2-valued cards are wild in the upcoming game.
What wins?
The Poker hands are ranked as such (from low to high): High Card, Pair, Two Pair, Three of a Kind, Straight, Flush, Full House, Four of a Kind, Straight Flush, and Five of a Kind.
The High Card means that you didn’t have any of the higher-valued hands. If no one else in your game qualifies with a pair or higher, the person with the highest valued card wins. In the event that two people have the same value of high card, the person with the second highest card wins. If two individuals also have the same second card, the third highest wins, and so on. In the event of a higher hand tie, such as if two people have the same kind of Straight, the high card is used to break the tie.
A Pair is two cards of the same rank with the other three cards in the hand being of different ranks. Higher pairs trump smaller pairs, so for example 4-4 beats 2-2. Again, if two players have the same pair, High Card breaks the tie.
Two Pair is two pairs of cards, plus a fifth card. For example: 4-4-2-2-3. If the high pairs are the same, the highest second pair wins. If the second pairs are the same, High Card breaks the tie.
Three of a Kind is when a player receives three cards of the same rank with the remaining two cards being of different rank. For example: Q-Q-Q-3-4. The highest Three of a Kind wins, and if two players have the same Three of a Kind, High Card breaks the tie.
