• In 1391 A.D. 720,000 sheets of toilet paper was produced by the Bureau of Imperial Suppliers in China. The sheets were 2’ by 3’ and were only used by Emperors.

• Joseph C. Gayety of New York began to produce “The Therapeutic Paper” in 1857. It sold for 50 cents per 500 sheet package and was the first US toilet paper.

• The first toilet paper on a roll was produced by the Scott Paper Company in 1890. It was not immediately well-received by consumers, as it was considered an “unmentionable.”

• In 1880, the British produced the first perforated toilet paper. Scott Paper Company produced the first US perforated toilet paper in 1910. Consumers could purchase either 1,000 or 650 sheets.

• According to doctors of the era, toilet paper needed to be absorbent, soft and be chemically pure in order to be safe.
