Exercise is essential as your dog gets older. Elderly dogs need to be gently active more than ever; movement keeps important joints and muscles functioning properly. But of course too much exercise, or exercise that is too vigorous, can leave the dog exhausted and may even hurt him. How can you find a balance?

First off, start small. If you don´t generally exercise him, then perhaps just walking him to the mailbox and back is enough to begin with. You might do just that, and nothing more, for several days, or even a week.

Once your dog has had a chance to get accustomed to his new routine, gently start expanding it. Instead of just walking to the mailbox, start walking a little ways down the block. Don´t go too far; you don´t want your dog to get too tired. And remember, any distance you walk out you´ll also have to walk back.

Depending on your dog´s health, you may eventually expand your walk to take in several blocks. Make sure you never go farther than your dog can walk easily. Also, give him plenty of fresh water when you get back; chances are, he´ll be quite thirsty.
