Themes and Party Stuff for Kids

Summary:
A private request for LifeScript.
Details or Sample:
Throw a birthday bash that includes plenty of party stuff for kids. Children of all ages love to take something home with them. Whether the take-homes are prizes from games played, favors, or creations made every child should be carrying something out the door when the party ends. Use imagination and a sense of fun to come up with a theme and then tailor the party stuff for kids to fit the theme. Get busy, get organized, and start planning a party loaded with fun and surprises.

The Character Theme

The most popular party themes for kids focus on licensed characters such as the ever-popular Winnie the Pooh, Barbie, Disney characters, and more. If a child’s favorite character happens to be one of the often seen personalities come up with party stuff for kids that is out of the normal party fare mode. Create bags filled with goodies that compliment the chosen color palette. Leaf through your child’s favorite storybook that features the character that the party theme centers around.

Imagine a theme of Sam I am from Dr. Seuss’s book Green Eggs and Ham. The illustrator used primary colors, but the cover colors are orange and white with green. Search for striped or solid orange, green, and white bags and fill them with various items from the book. Make Sam I Am’s hat from red felt and give one to each child. Little boys enjoy cars. Look for a teal colored Matchbox car with a similar look to the one in the book. A small stuffed mouse or fox, pencils in primary colors, and a Dr. Seuss bookmark make great inexpensive party stuff for kids. Add some treats and the party favor completes the day.

The Art Theme

Children of all ages love to color, paint, and use chalk on sidewalks. The art theme offers a lot of fun ideas for a great party. Make the day about art. Instead of using bags look for inexpensive plastic boxes in bright colors. Fill the box with sidewalk chalk, a new box of crayons, colored pencils, washable markers, and water paints. Write each child’s name on the outside of the box and then send them out to the backyard with their box in tow. Purchase large t-shirts to hand out to each child. Begin the art party by having the children paint their t-shirt and write their name on the back.

Set up various art stations such as a concrete sidewalk or patio for chalk creations and a picnic table for coloring. Provide plenty of white and colored paper for the budding artists. Local newspapers may have the end rolls of newsprint for purchase or to give away. Tack a long roll of paper on a fence and let the kids paint to their heart’s content.

Add other fun art materials that kid’s love to create with such as glue, glitter, buttons, feathers, beads, and all sorts of artistic do-dads. Let the imagination take flight before the party, during the party, and after the party by sending the kid’s home with fun party stuff they used to create art.

The Star Gazing Theme

A party for older children begins when the rest of the world prepares to go to bed. A sleepover with a star gazing theme gives kids the opportunity to lie on their backs in a sleeping bag and watch the night sky for constellations and heavenly bodies. Borrow a telescope or start the evening at an observatory. Depending on the age of the partygoers stickers are always fun to have so include them in a bag of goodies. A rolled up poster or star chart or a plastic place mat of the planets and stars for younger children can be added as party favors. Toss in star shaped candies to top off the take home bags. Create take home bags from black nylon netting or tulle and silver sequin stars or use fabric with a celestial theme. Tie the bags with silver cord for a finishing touch. Serve popcorn, s’mores and hot chocolate on cooler nights or lemonade when it is warm.

Old-Fashioned Summer Theme

An old-fashioned summer theme may appeal more to little girls than boys. The idea is to spend time outdoors making old-time crafts from nature. Serve glasses of pink lemonade as the girls create chains of daisies, hollyhock dolls, or fairy furniture from treasures gathered on a walk around the yard, park, or a near by woods. Also provide party stuff for kids that fits the theme like a magnifying glass to look at ladybugs or a butterfly unfurling its tongue about to sip nectar. Pencils covered in flowers, a flower shaped cookie in a small bag tied with a ribbon, and anything fairy tucked into small baskets lined with pastel fabric squares cut with pinking shears gives the girls plenty to take home.

For a special treat serve homemade ice cream with fairy cakes made from cupcakes cut in half to create fairy wings, frosted, and sprinkled with pastel colored sugar.

How To Make Hollyhock Dolls

A good supply of fresh hollyhocks in various stages of flowering from tight bud to full-blown and straight pins with pearl tops is all that is needed for this project. Each girl selects an open hollyhock and pushes a straight pin through the center on the inside of the flower. Next choose a bud showing color. Push the bud, colored end up, onto the pin. Hold the doll up and her dress should flow away from her. The last step is optional. Pin a round, flat, tight bud to the colored bud creating a jaunty hat for the elegant flower lady.

How To Make Fairy Furniture

Children must be old enough to handle glue or hot glue in pots for this fun project. A suggested list of things needed follows: Grapevine or other twigs, various mosses like Spanish moss, reindeer moss, and sheet moss; dried flowers such as tiny rosebuds, loose lavender buds, chamomile, globe amaranth, and hydrangeas with the heads separated into individual flowers; leaves of all kinds, pods of all kinds such as acorn hats, walnut shells, milkweed pods, lotus pods, poppy pods, and love in the mist pods. All these items can be found at craft stores.

A milkweed cradle for a baby fairy begins with a half of a milkweed pod. Have the girls decorate their pod by gluing bits of flowers or rosebuds on the outside. Glue bits of soft moss on the inside for a bed. A leaf becomes a blanket.

Fairies take tea at a table made with a lotus pod and twigs cut into 2-inch lengths. Dip a twig into glue and then stick the twig into one of the holes where a seed once rested inside the lotus pod. Do the same with three more twigs until the table stands secure. Voila! The fairies now have a table. Cover the table in moss and/or an assortment of dried flower petals for a fine table cloth. Make chairs and benches by choosing various pods and using them for seats with legs from twigs glued in place.

What is tea without a cup and saucer? Snip the end off a poppy pod. The end is shaped like a tiny plate. Love-in-the-mist pods sport a charming cream and deep red, pink, lavender, or purple stripe making them ideal for tiny cups. Snip off the frilly end of the pod where it meets the stem. Make the cup the size you want by snipping until it’s just right. Take a look at grapevine and find a tiny curled piece where the vine grabbed on to a branch, fence, or gate. Snip off several curly-cues that look like a cup handle. Glue the curly grapevine to the love-in-the-mist pod. Now glue the entire cup to the poppy pod. Sugar bowls and even cream pitchers can be made using love-in-the-mist pods.

These are just a few ideas to get the party planning juices flowing. Think of what children love to do and then create an entire party around the idea. Kids who love to experiment would find a mad scientist party fun and exciting. A cowboy or down on the farm theme comes with great potential for silly games and lots of party stuff for kids. From sippy cups for toddlers to crazy straws for preschoolers and on up the ideas for party favors are as endless as children’s laughter at a great party.
