Tips on the Writing Life (Best Offer)
|
Summary:
Thereīs more to being an author than book signings, the best seller list, and an appearance on The Opray Winfrey Show. Hereīs what you can expect from the writing life. |
Details or Sample:
So, you want to write a book. So do I. So does your sister, your mother and your brother. And their sister and mother and brother.
Or so it seems.
There is something so permanent about books. They capsulize our dreams of making an impact in life, of influencing countless lives like Mark Twain, Louisa Mae Alcott or even Carolyn Keene.
But before you begin, letīs get real. Thereīs more to being an author than book signings, the bestseller list and a guest appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show.
These days just about anybody can write and publish book. We can all self-publish on the Internet, at least with some cash and a little help from experts.
So these days, authors are expected to do more groundwork than you might expect. In fact, no matter where you work as a writer, there are sure to be compromises.
Staff writers at newspapers and magazines just research and write. The publisher gets the readers, but reporters have to write what they are told to write -- even if itīs obituaries for two years before they can graduate to car wrecks and fires.
As a free-lancer, there is freedom to choose your assignments. But with it comes the responsibility to make other choices: What type of computer to use, what type of software, where to work, how long to work, etc.
In short, free-lancers run their own businesses. They learn to market their own work. They can no longer just write, unless theyīre willing to take a chance it wonīt sell. They need to research the marketplace first to see who is most likely to have a need for the type of article or story they want to write. They need to see if itīs been done recently.
