How To Host the Perfect Potluck Picnic

By Keesa Renee DuPre

In summer, what could be more perfect than an afternoon picnic? Gather friends and family together, light up the grill, and spend the afternoon sharing food, fun, and conversation.

But if what if you want to be able to invite friends over on a regular basis—maybe even once a week or a couple of times a month? The cost of feeding so many people so often will be pretty steep. The solution? Host a potluck picnic! When you invite someone, be sure to include the word "potluck" in the invitation and ask them to bring something. This doesn´t have to be embarrassing; keep it casual. For example, "Want to come over on Saturday? We´re having a potluck picnic. Could you bring that delicious spinach dip you make, and a couple of bags of chips to go with it?"

A potluck picnic has several advantages. For one, the cost of the food is spread out between several different people—which means you have the freedom to host parties more often! Following a few simple rules will make a potluck picnic fun and easy.

Rule #1: Be specific. Don´t invite someone to just a picnic if you want them to bring something. Also, don´t invite them to a "potluck picnic" without asking them to bring something. Not everyone knows what "potluck" means. Save yourself the embarrassment of having to explain; ask them to bring a specific dish to a potluck picnic.

Rule #2: Ask for a specific dish. If you just ask them to "bring something", you might end up with twenty potato salads and no chips or drinks. When you´re writing up a list of people you want to invite, just jot an item next to their name. When you call them, ask them if they´d be willing to bring that item.
