Gifts for Grads
It’s springtime and that means thousands of graduation invitations will appear in mailboxes all across the country. Perhaps you know the graduating students, or they may be the son or daughter of an acquaintance. Whatever their affiliation to you may be, shopping for a graduate can be difficult. You want to select something fun, yet practical, but don’t worry! There are plenty of interesting, useful options available for both the high school and college graduate.
High school graduates
Leaving for college is a hugely momentous occasion for a young person. It is both exciting and overwhelming, so help supply them with things they’ll need during their first year as an independent adult.
1. Shower gear. Pack a plastic bucket (equipped with a handle) with shampoo, conditioner, body wash, washcloths, shower sponges, etc. The graduating high school student may look at you strangely when you give them this as a gift, but later they will understand just how badly they need it!
2. Gift certificates. Students always need cash, so get them a gift certificate for CDs, DVDs, clothes, bedding, or coffee. Even if they don’t use it for their first semester at school, a gift certificate is a good thing to hold onto in case of a financial emergency.
3. Dry erase board. Many college students attach these boards to their dorm doors so friends can leave messages for them. You can find the boards at discount stores and office supply stores. Consider personalizing the board with the student’s name.
4. Personalized beach towel. It’s easy to lose towels in the bathroom or while doing laundry, but a monogrammed beach towel helps reduce the odds of theft, or an innocent towel mix-up.
5. Tool kit. Most college students do not come prepared to accomplish tasks like assembling furniture or hanging pictures. They’ll need a tool kit to get their rooms in order, so save them some money and buy one as a gift. Again, consider personalizing the kit with their name or a message.
College graduates
1. Money, money, money. Four years at a university will empty the pockets of almost any student. Whether you give it to them in the form of a check or gift card, they’ll highly appreciate it!
2. Wisdom in a book. Dr. Seuss’s Oh The Places You’ll Go is a timeless book that is very relevant to the college graduate.
3. Digital camera. Consider sending this gift earlier than the date of graduation so the graduate will have a brand new camera to photograph their last college parties, and friends and families on graduation day.
4. Hope chests aren’t just for girls anymore! These beautiful trunks are ideal for graduates of either gender. Practical and aesthetically pleasing, hope chests are a great place to store CDs, DVDs, and clothing.
