Details or Sample:
The condition known as restless leg syndrome, or RLS, is thought to affect up to 10% of the United States population. While anyone can suffer from restless leg syndrome, the condition seems to be more prevalent in older individuals, and somewhat more common in women than in men. The symptoms of restless leg syndrome can range from very mild to very painful, and the symptoms can get worse over time.

Restless leg syndrome happens when the legs become very uncomfortable, and the condition is characterized by unpleasant and painful sensations such as burning, tugging or creeping. Often these symptoms are only relieved when the sufferer gets up and moves, making traveling, and even sleeping through the night, quite a challenge for those with RLS.

Research into the exact causes of restless leg syndrome is still ongoing, but at this time no cause has been found. There are theories that RLS is caused by an imbalance of chemicals in the brain, a vitamin deficiency or even genetics.

There are several symptoms that accompany the onset of restless leg syndrome, but the most notable of those symptoms is the presence of those burning, creeping and tugging sensations. The time of day when those symptoms appear can vary, but often the symptoms will be worse at night, making getting a good night’s sleep one of the major challenges of the condition. In fact insomnia is one of the biggest complaints for those who suffer from RLS, and this lack of sleep can cause many serious problems, from car accidents to problems at work.

There are a number of treatments those suffering from RLS can try to alleviate their symptoms and reduce the pain and insomnia that can accompany this common condition, a number of anti-nausea, anti-psychotic and anti-seizure medications have proven effective in some RLS sufferers, as have a number of lifestyle changes and remedies such as ice baths, leg massages and exercise. It is important for those who are troubled by RLS symptoms to discuss their condition with their doctor in order to find the right treatment or combination of treatments.
