Simple Mind Tricks For The Treadmill User

I remember having to go to physical therapy a few years ago after I had hurt my back in a fall. I had to go to my appointments three times a week for a total of 12 weeks. After the initial visit each session was an hour in length and always started with at least ten minutes on the treadmill. This was meant to warm up my muscles before they were stretched. I had never been much of a fan of the treadmill as they just seemed so plain and boring. I reluctantly wandered into the room where I was to start my days and was pleasantly surprised by what I saw.

The entire eastern wall was a picture window that framed the entire city including itīs sunrise backdrop. The row of tread-mills all faced out through the window and it really seemed that if I had walked long enough that I would have eventually gotten there. I hadnīt realized that any time had passed while on the treadmill, let alone ten minutes and my muscles were definitely happier while they were being stretched. Later that day I felt invigorated for the first time in a very long while.

Throughout therapy I found myself arriving a bit early to get in at least 30 minutes on the treadmill before stretching. I knew the hospital had provided that magnificent view to inspire patients away from fear and pain and it worked tremendously for me. Once my therapy was over however I found myself utterly bored again. It emerged in frustration, watching the clock, jumping on and off for various reasons, stopping early and finally, complete and total procrastination.

With a few simple audio, visual and scent adjustments in my workout space I was able to get myself motivated and moving on my treadmill again. I donīt have a picturesque view so I found some glorious artwork (posters on cardboard backing with strips of velcro) to emulate the experience - Desert flowers, mountains, beaches, islands, forests, sunrises and sunsets.

For literally pocket-change I changed my entire treadmill experience.
