To Scratch or Not To Scratch

Summary:
Giving your cat a proper place to scratch will go a long way to protecting your furniture.
Details or Sample:
Be sure to provide at least one, preferably more, approved scratching areas around your house. It may sound silly, but if you demonstrate to your cat how to properly use the post or scratch board, they will catch on much faster. This method will not only give the cat a visual cue, but will leave your scent on the post as well. The cat will want to investigate the scent mark, and proceed to leave their own. Praise your cat when they use the approved items for claw sharpening.

There are some methods of deterring cats from certain parts of the house or specific items. Not all cats respond, however, though most do.

Applying double sided tape to furniture in areas your cat is likely to scratch is a good line of defense. Cats hate the sticky feeling when they put their paws on the tape. This will make most cats find some place else to scratch.

You can also offend your cat´s nose with an application of pepper to furniture and plants. You may use black, white or cayenne peppers for this application.

Many pet stores and veterinarians have Bitter Apple or Bitter Orange sprays available. These sprays are particularly effective against cats for whom nothing else seems to work.

Cats in general will either use a scratching post, or ignore it. If they get a nail caught in the post, they may refuse to use it again. The same sort of selection is used on trees in the great outdoors. Make sure the post is covered in a fairly smooth material rather than plush carpeting.
