In more recent years, as the wolf population was decimated and farming became more successful, the breed was allowed to dwindle. There was no need for so large a dog to hunt, or to protect the home. Irish Wolfhounds were almost allowed to die out as a breed. They were intensely popular an in high demand around the world, spreading them far and wide and away from the breeding populace. Oliver Cromwell eventually recognized the danger and banned the export of the Irish Wolfhound in an attempt to preserve the breed.

Captain George Augustus Graham took on the responsibility of reviving the breed in the middle of the 19th century. He collected the last, best specimens of the breed from their far flung travels, and bred them with Deerhounds, Great Danes, one Tibetan Mastiff and a Borzoi. This out-breeding was used to regain the size and type of the original breed. Captain Graham founded the Irish Wolfhound Club in 1885 to assist in preserving the breed he had fought so hard to save.

Irish Wolfhounds are graceful, easy movers, in spite of the awkward appearance lent to the by their wiry coats. They are large dogs, with an even, high head carriage and noble face. When properly groomed, they appear to have tremendously long eyelashes or eyebrows protecting their eyes, giving them an endearingly sheepish look.
