Cats Got Our Home (Best Offer)
|
Summary:
This article tells of my parentīs experience of renting out to a violin hobbyist and a cat lover, with some interesting results. |
Details or Sample:
When my two brothers and I left home for college within the space of an year, our parents decided to rent out the now vacant upper storey of our duplex in Manhattan. They decided that this would not only fill up the emptiness of the rooms above, but also help pay our college fees. And the best part was that there was a covered outer staircase, which meant that both the tenants above and my parents could have a fair amount of privacy and security once the inner staircase door was bolted.
Having never rented out before, they decided to take it one step at a time. Friends and neighbors had regaled them with stories of horror tenants, and .....
........
The only hitch was that Elena, the fashion stylist, had two cats. My mother did not want any pet tenants, because she never had any pets and never really wanted any. But Elena not only agreed to pay an extra security deposit against her pets but also offered a pet-maintenance fee along with the rent each month. Joanne, the other .....
.......
Joanne apparently had an afternoon shutdown of her restaurant, and was taking advantage of her post-lunch free hours by practicing on her violin. Elenaīs cats did not want to be left out, and were doing their best to join Joanne in a chorus despite being locked up in Elenaīs room. Hence the strange and ghostly cacophony. My mother patiently explained to Joanne of her tendency for migraines if she missed her afternoon nap, and after.....
......
A few days later, my dad who had wandered out of the bedroom one night to get a snack, almost jumped out of his skin when he saw a pair of eyes glowing down on him from the dark living-room. Lights revealed a startled cat on top of the bookshelf. Elena was called and she took away her cat apologizing profusely for her Abyssinianīs nocturnal ventures. Milady, her Abyssinian, apparently liked to sleep in high places, and Elenaīs bed was obviously too low for her.
As time passed, my parents realized to their dismay that Milady apparently also preferred my parentīs rooms much more than her own, and was found regally perched on various nooks including my motherīs wardrobe, and the top of our refrigerator. Rag, the other cat, ......
.......The cats were toilet trained and so clean and affectionate that mum did not really mind at first, though Elena was summoned time and again to take them away. Mum just put a litter box outside the patio, and decided to let things be.
But she took ill soon after, her sinus and migraine acting up at the same time, and she would sneeze continuously for ten minutes at a time. Doctors diagnosed cat allergy, and Milady and Rag had to be confined to their own home upstairs. Elena was very apologetic, offered to pay for motherīs treatment, and promised to lock up her cats so they would never be .......
.............She was a nervous first-time mother and bit and scratched at anyone who wanted to get near her or the kittens, including Elena. My father went ballistic, and repeatedly threatened to throw the girls out and void the lease, Elena and Joanne were distraught and in tears, and my mother started having her sneezing fits again.
Finally mum had to move out to a friendīs place for a week, because she didnīt have the heart to displace Milady and her kittens. Dad nearly called SPCA, but let himself be prevailed upon by me and the two blubbering women not to do it. Milady ruled her roost in the topmost shelf of mumīs wardrobe...
...Elena could not afford the rent on her own, especially with the added problem of her cats losing her the entire security deposit in cleaning bills for my parentīs home. The girls gave notice and broke the lease agreeing to pay the damages, and my parents heaved a combined sigh of relief.
Once Milady had been sent off with her tiny darlings, and the pleasantly surprised cleaners had done their job for the whole house the second time in six weeks, my parents got their home back to themselves. ....
.......a few long vacancies in the past dozen years. Their first questions to prospective tenants are invariably about cats and violins.
