There are a lot of sprays and other chemical air fresheners out on the market today. While they are great for some people, others have issues with them. People who own birds are especially wary of what they put into the atmosphere of their homes.

There are inexpensive alternatives for making your home smell delightful.

Put a few drops of essential oil on a cotton ball. Place the cotton in a small glass or ceramic dish and put it in an out of the way spot. The fragrance will fill the air, sometimes for days. Be sure to keep the used cotton balls out of the reach of small children or pets who might try to eat them.

Citrus and clove oils are easy to obtain, and are some of the most popular for this type of air freshening.

You might also put a small pot of water on to boil. Once it is boiling, reduce the temperature so that it stays hot. Add slices of citrus, or spices that you find comforting. Be sure to check it periodically and add water when needed. Be sure to dispose of the pot´s contents properly, keeping it away from pets and children. The ingredients may be organic, but they are likely to taste nasty.

During the Holiday Season, you might add pine needles, cinnamon sticks, whole cloves, or a touch of vanilla for a warm, comforting presence in your home.

In areas of higher humidity and warmth, like the bathroom, use fresh sprays of eucalyptus and other aromatic plants to leave a clean scent in the air.
