Summary:
The Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) has a program to designate Texas communities as “Certified Retirement Communities”. The goal of TDA is to promote retirement in Texas, to Texans and also those in other states.
Details or Sample:
The Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) began a program in September of 2005 to promote communities in Texas for retirement. The program has several requirements of interest to retirees or the soon to be retired. To qualify, each community must provide an assessment to address sixteen different areas. A community overview will be included, as well as the availability of local housing, employment opportunities, public transportation, major highways, the availability of emergency medical services and a long –term plan for assisting retirees. Also included is a list of recreational areas, festivals and events, performing arts, availability of continuing education, and all levels of sports activities. Each community applying for the Certified Retirement Community Program must also include a marketing plan for the program, and information on tax structure, personal safety, leisure living and availability of assisted living health care services.

The Texas Department of Agriculture’s mission is to help rural communities to encourage retirement in their area. The TDA plans on providing help by promoting Texas to retirees or those soon to be retired inside the state as well as in other states. They also encourage tourism to the state as a desirable retirement location. To become certified, each community must submit an application and satisfy program requirements. Once accepted, the program standards must be maintained and a re-certification every five years is required.

What the TDA offers to communities who qualify includes the creation of a web site to market each certified retirement community, distribute brochures about the community, and direct inquires to the certified community. The TDA will work with and support each certified retirement community by providing help in evaluation of the qualities it has to offer to retirees. They also plan events to highlight the benefits of retiring in Texas
