Texas Companies Enjoy High Ratings on Fortune Magazine’s “Top 100 Best Companies to Work for 2007”
|
Summary:
Texas rated well on Fortune Magazine’s list of top 100 best companies to work for. I have listed six separate corporate headquarters that made the list, with a brief description of each company and the city where the headquarters is located. Three are listed for “best companies” and three for “top paying companies”. The entire article is shown in the long summary. |
Details or Sample:
Texas rates well in the “Top 100 Best Companies to Work For 2007” in the January 22, 2007 issue of Fortune Magazine. To be eligible to make this list, companies around the United States apply. One of the criteria used to determine the best companies to work for is to allow Fortune’s researchers the ability to anonymously interview 400 current employees. Several companies applied to make the list, 446 in fact.
The list is broken down into several categories. One of these categories is the “Top Ten” of company headquarters. Three of the companies that made that list are located in the state of Texas. Overall, Texas company headquarters come in second, with 11. California rates highest, with 13, and New York third, with nine. Not a bad place to be.
The three company headquarters are:
• Container Store. Located in Coppell, Texas, this company sells unique products for storage and organization. They pay sales employees 50% to 100% above industry standards. They offer a family friendly shift from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. to allow parents the ability to drop off and pick up their children from school. They have been on Fortune’s list for 8 years now.
• Whole Foods Market. Located in Austin, Texas, their website claims they are the “Worlds leading natural and organic foods supermarket”. Whole Foods limits the pay of top executives with long standing salary caps.
• Methodist Hospital Systems. Located in Houston, Texas, this non-profit health care organization is a network of community-based hospitals and an acclaimed home health care agency, according to their website. Last year, when gas prices soared, every employee except top executives received a gift card worth $250 towards gasoline.
Texas also rates well for the top 25 highest paying jobs in the US, with three of them located here.
• EOG Resources. Located in Houston, Texas, their website says that they are ‘one of the largest independent (non-integrated) oil and natural gas companies in the United States”. This company has flourished, benefiting employees because they receive stock options and bonuses every year. In the last five years, share prices have more than tripled.
• Alcon Laboratories. Located in Fort Worth, Alcon has made Fortune’s “100 Best Companies to Work For” list for the past nine years. This eye-care company puts a high priority on employee health, shown by the company paying 90% of employee’s health insurance premiums, operating a 24-hour fitness center and paying $200 to workers who participate in an exercise program for ten weeks.
• Texas Instruments. Headquartered in Dallas, the “world leader in digital signal processing and analog technologies” according to their website, is apparently a hard company to leave. Twenty percent of employees have worked for Texas Instruments for over 20 years, and 10% for more than 15 years. Eighteen of the 22 members of the top leadership team are career employees.
Besides headquarters, several other companies located in Texas made the list of Fortune Magazine’s “Top 100 Best Companies to Work For 2007”. Fourteen corporations have made the list, several having multiple locations throughout Texas. From highly technical firms to home building contractors, medical systems to financial institutions, a wide range of employment opportunities exists. Considering you likely spend nearly half of your waking hours at your job, working at a company that rates highly with its employees is definitely a plus. Whether you live in Texas, or are planning a move there, Texas is definitely worth your serious consideration.
